Tanjung Puting National Park

One of the internationally famous ecotourism destinations in Indonesia is Tanjung Puting National Park in the southwest of Central Kalimantan peninsula. Tanjung Puting National Park offers impressive experience to its visitors.

This is called a park, but unlike any park that you have seen in your city, this is a jungle! It is a real jungle, which is home to the most incredible animals in the world: orang utans and proboscis monkeys! The male proboscis monkeys are interesting because they have enormous snout. So, imagine yourself to be in the jungle and meet these special animals in their original habitat. What will you do when you meet them?

To see orang utans we should go to Camp Leakey. Camp Leaky is located in the heart of Tanjung Puting National Park. This is a rehabilitation place for ex-captive orang utans and also a preservation site. This camp was established by Birute Galdikas, an important scientist who has studied orang utans since 1971.

To reach the place, we should take a boat down Sekonyer river. The boat is popularly called perahu klotok which is a boathouse that can accommodate four people. The trip by the boat to Camp Leaky takes three days and two nights.

The traveling in the boat offers another unforgettable experience. You sleep, cook, and eat in that klotok, night and day during your journey into the jungle. In daylight, on your way to Camp Leaky, you can see trees filled with proboscis monkeys. At night, you can enjoy the clear sky and the amazingly bright stars as the only lights for the night.

Complimenting And Showing Care/Sympathy

COMPLIMENTING

Compliment is an expression to appreciate or praise other people. Compliment is useful to give encouragement so that people will keep on doing their best and even improve their performance.
When to express compliment :
- On general occasion,
- When someone has done his/her best,
- When you visit someone’s house for the first time,
- If you notice something new about someone’s appearance.

SHOWING CARE/SYMPATHY
Sympathy expression is an expression or feeling of pity and sorrow when we know and see people are unlucky, have trouble, or are in bad condition. For example, our friend is sad because his/her grandfather is sick. We can entertain him/her by showing sympathy. By expressing sympathy, we want to show our concern or care for other people’s condition.

The purpose of expressing sympathy is to comfort people who have trouble or are in bad conditions. It is also aimed to let people know that we care for them. We can express sympathy directly to him/her orally by saying something supportive. In this way, we let our friend know that we know about his/her sadness and we let our friend know that we care and want to help him/her. If the person who is in trouble is far from us, we can send him/her a letter, postcard, short message service (sms), or email to show our care/ sympathy.

The Red Bird of Paradise

An Indonesian endangered species, the Red Bird of Paradise is distributed to lowland rainforests of Waigeo and Batanta islands of West Papua. This species shares its home with another bird of paradise, the Wilson's Bird of Paradise. Hybridization between these two species are expected but not recorded yet.

The Bird of Paradise, Paradisaea rubra, is large, up to 33cm long, brown and yellow bird with a dark brown iris, grey legs and yellow bill. The male has an emerald green face, a pair of elongated black corkscrew-shaped tail wires, dark green feather pompoms above each eye and a train of glossy crimson red plumes with whitish tips at either side of the breast.

The male measures up to 72 cm long, including the ornamental red plumes that require at least six years to fully attain. The female resembles the male but is smaller in size, with a dark brown face and has no ornamental red plumes. The diet consists mainly of fruits, berries and arthropons.

The Graduation Standard

The implementation of the new graduation standard for High-School Students has evoked people to bring different responses. Some people's ideas are for some others against the rule.

Some people agree with the rule because it indicates students' mastery of the whole material or the competence they have managed to have over the past three years. The result of the final exam is also significant for students' future study in the higher level. In addition, we are far left behind by our neighboring countries that have implemented a higher graduation grade standard. If the standard is omitted, then student will get left behind even further by those students from neighboring countries students.

However, some other people believe that imposing a high standard will not be effective. The results of the exams have proven to be unreliable. How can you asses the students' competence only in a couple of days. A smart student for example, may get a low grade just because he is sick during the exam. On the other hand, an idle student may achieve the standard due to luck. There should then be an alternative way to the national exam.

Despite different points of view, the government's relating party are intensely working on this matter in the hope of getting a better solution upon improving the High-School graduates' quality.

Boarding School Education

While many parents send their children to public schools, there are some other people choose boarding school education. They prefer their children are educated there for some reasons.

At an early age interacting and communicating with people is very important for a child's personal life and can be especially helpful for his/her future. In a boarding school, shy children can take advantage of interaction through communal activities. The boarding school also offers a great variety of activities such as arts, sports, and music that allow the children to demonstrate and develop specialized skills in their free time.

Furthermore, the structured way of life and strict rules at the boarding school may help students to get used to a well ordered way of life. The manners and social skills will help them to become more responsible and confident, and to develop their talents in leadership. Professionally trained teachers and educators in the boarding school can offer excellent education without the parents' constant supervision.

In conclusion, boarding schools allow students to interact communally and to do some positive activities. Besides they also build students characters.

Hunger Management

Hormones, hardwiring, and set point aside, hunger isn’t completely beyond our ability to control. Clinical and health psychologist Susan Head, Ph.D, suggests several ways to stave it off when we know we’ve already eaten enough:

  • Have a drink – water, coffee, tea, club soda with lime. Often what initially fells like hunger is thirst and the liquid can temporarily fill your stomach.
  • Eat breakfast. Many people who skip it eat much more later
  • Delay. If you are hungry even though you think you’ve eaten enough, give yourself 20 minutes to consider whether you’re feeling real hunger or boredom, stress, or unhappiness.
  • If a mealtime is coming up in an hour or so, remind yourself of that. Just knowing there’s only a short wait can give you incentive to hold off a little longer.

Alligator

Alligators are reptiles.  There are two kinds of alligators.   The American  alligator lives in low, wet parts  of the  southeastern   United States.  The Chinese  alligator lives in the lower  Yangtze  River Valley in China. Both alligators  are  related  to crocodiles   and  Central  and  South  American caimans.

Alligators have thick bodies and tails. Their eyes stick up so that  they  can see when their bodies are underwater.   They have tough skin and short,  strong  legs. They swim by moving their strong tails from side to side.

The largest male alligators are about 12 feet (3.7 meters) long and weigh 450 to 550 pounds (204 to 249 kilograms).   Females  are smaller.

A female  alligator makes a large nest of plants on the wet grass. She lays 20 to 60 eggs that are a little larger than chickens' eggs. The young hatch in about 9 weeks.  Alligators  live 50 to 60 years.

Alligators   eat small animals, including fish, frogs,  snakes,  turtles,   and  birds.  Large male alligators even attack dogs, pigs, and cattle and pull them underwater.   During winter, alligators  nest underwater   or dig holes in swamps  and marshes.

Alligators  and crocodiles  are different  in some ways. For instance, crocodiles have a narrower snout. Another telltale sign is that the fourth tooth on a crocodile's  bottom  jaw shows when its mouth is closed.

Whales

Whales are the largest animals on earth. Bigger than elephants, they may grow 95 feet long, and weigh 150 tons. A baby blue whale, just born, can be 23 feet long and weigh 3 tons.

Although whales live in the oceans and swim like fish, they are mammals, like cows and elephants. Unlike fish they bear young alive, not as eggs. Their babies live on their mother's milk. They breathe through their lungs and hold their breath when they go under water, If they cannot come to the surface to breathe fresh air, they will drown. They are warm-blooded. Fish, however, lay eggs, breathe oxygen in the water, and are cold-blooded.

Whales Live in all   the oceans. In the winter some of them go to warm waters to breed and in the summer most of them go to cold waters to feed. There are two kinds of whales, whales with teeth (toothed whales)and whales without teeth (baleen whales). The toothed whales eat fish and squid, which they can .catch with their teeth, although they swallow their food without chewing it. The baleen whales eat plankton (small sea animals and plants). When they find plankton, they open their mouths and swim into the plankton. When they close their mouths they squeeze out the water and swallow the plankton.

Whales have few enemies. Only human beings and the killer whales attack whales. And whales do not seem to fight among themselves. They usually live from 20 to 30 years.

Where should be after High School?

The National Examination result will be publicly announced in the next short time. Euphoria will flood for those Who get success. On other hand, it will be sorry to hear that there are some of them do not succeed in their national final examination. For those who succeed soon will think to decide; where will they be after graduating high school? Actually it will be easy to decide for those who have arranged and thought earlier. But for those who have not planed anything yet, it will be quite confusing.

Continuing study or looking for work is the primary choice among them. When they think about continuing study, they will think hard about the time and cost. How long the higher study win last? And how high is the cost? In the same way, when they think about straightly seeking job, what skill and competence they have got is a big matter of questioning. So, doing both choices at the same time is an alternative.

Continuing study as well as seeking job is possibly done but it will be hard for them. Conventionally, studying in the university needs much time to spend especially in the first year. It is true because they have to do and adapt a lot of things in their new higher school. It will be very hard to look for job. Therefore, it should come to their mind of continuing studying at higher school from their own home. As a result, the available time will be more flexible for them, Then it will be very possible to seek job and get the appropriate one. This type of studying is publicly known as distance learning.

As the alternative method of studying, besides the conventional studying Which students and the lecturer have to meet in the fixed time and place regularly, distant learning possibility to grow better. Possibly working and studying surely will create high quality graduate. Distance learning should appear as a considerable choice for them.

Natural Reservation

The energy sources most used today have a variety of bad effect on our environment. The coal mining destroys land. Transporting oil across the ocean has resulted in oil spills and destroys ocean life. The burning of coal and petroleum causes air pollution. A lot of people get cough when the air is polluted. People cannot enjoy pure fresh air because their lungs are affected by tuberculosis. Nuclear fission creates dangerous radioactive wastes. Living creatures and various organisms are really in danger.

The most widely used source of energy is petroleum. The chemicals that petroleum contains are used to make fertilizers, drugs, synthetic, fibres, plastics, and many other products. Like coal, petroleum also creates environment problems. Removing large quantities of petroleum from under the ground may cause the land to sink. Transporting petroleum may result in oil spills. Burning petroleum causes air pollution. The bad smelling from the combustion will make people become unhealthy.

In place where great amounts of coal are incinerated, as in power plants, antipollution devices can be used. These are expensive and not completely effective. A betterway to use coal would be to convert it first to liquid or gas. Either these ways produces more heat than heat produced by burning the coal.

Water is an important forest product. Forest soils are giant sponges. They soak up rain so that it seeps slowly into the ground. Most towns and cities depend on these forest reservoirs. Forests steams flow steadily in dry weather. When trees are cut, the soil is exposed. Then rain runs off quickly, causing erosion and flood. Erosion and flood will spoil everything.

Reforestation and the fight against fires, insects, and diseases are important parts of forest management. With present technology, we are looking forward to find other sources of energy that can substitute the' used up coal and petroleum.

Cigarettes, Smokers, and Smoking

Smoking is bad habit that is very hard to break. Smokers are very everywhere. Many people smoke just to socialized, but many others are too addicted to quit.

A cigarette is like a toxin hypermarket. You can find many kinds toxin in it : acetone, carbon monoxide, tar, arsenic, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and toluene. The tar itself contains more than 43 substances that can caused cancer. Scientist say that when we are smoking, we put more than 4.000 kinds of toxic materials into our body.

However, many smokers believe that cigarette with low tar is less dangerous. And so is a filtered cigarette. But the problem is one cigarette is never enough for addicted smokers.

Another myth about smoking is that it can not only make them awake, but also raise their inspiration. This is contrary to the findings of a research in California which show that smoker's ability to think lower than that of non-smokers.

Smoking is indeed a serious social problem in our country. The government keeps reminding that smoking is dangerous, not only for smokers themselves, but also for other people in the surrounding (passive smoker). But we warning do no seem to get any response.

How is Dust Useful to us?

How is Dust Useful to us?

Most people think that dust is very harmful to us. But this is not true. Dust is, in fact, very useful, and therefore, it is essential to know what dust is and how it formed.
Every solid substance is composed of very small particles. When these small particles of matter are scattered, they become dust particles. For example, if we go on breaking a brick or a stone in to small pieces, it will turn in to small particles. These particle get mixed with air and there are called dust particles. The air then carries dust particles from one place to another.
There are differrent ways by which dust is formed. When solid substance breaks, dust is formed. Smoke generated by the burning of coal, wood, petrol, etc. also produces dust. Dust particle also come from dead plants, sea salt, desert, volcanic sand, etc. The particles of earth’s surface also fly in the air in the form of dust.
The biggest use of the dust particles is that clouds condenses on the dust particles in the form of water-drops. These drops fall on the earth as rains. The absence of dust particles can delay the rain. Likewise, mist, fog, etc. are also formed due to the presence of dust particles.

A Food Chain

The food chain is the way energy goes from one living thing another through food. Plants are the first level in the food chain. They convert the energy in sunlight to make their own food using a process called photosynthesis. Plants are called primary producers in the food chain.
Next, animal eat the plants that use the sun’s energy to grow. Animals are called consumers. Animals that eat plants are called primary consumers. Animals that eat other animals are called secondary consumers.
Animals store the energy in their bodies. Every organism need to obtain energy in order to live. Energy flows from plants to animals and from animals to bigger animals through the steps of eating and being eaten. In other word, each part of the food chain is directly connected to the other, just like the links in a chain.
